Week #29: Apr. 7th - 11th
Dear Families,
It’s been a mixed bag of weather this week ❄️π¨π‘️- snow, winds, and those cooler temps keeping us on our toes!
While we’re all eager to pack away the winter gear π§£π§€, better keep it close for now! Brighter days are just around the corner π·☀️✨
πINTERNATIONAL DAY OF PINK:π
Did you know that the second Wednesday in April is the International Day of Pink? ππΈ
This day is a powerful reminder of the importance of standing together against bullying, discrimination, homophobia, transphobia, and all forms of hate. π✋
I believe that Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (DE&I) is essential to teach our children every day. π✨
Embracing DE&I fosters creativity, fresh perspectives, and greater understanding. When we create spaces that celebrate differences, we help everyone feel safe, valued, and at peace. π️π
By celebrating DE&I, we create a world where people of all races, abilities, ages, genders, religions, sexual orientations, and backgrounds feel welcomed and respected. ππ€
Here at Nottawa, our class family has made it our mission to build a community where everyone feels safe, valued, and happy to BE WHO THEY ARE πππ
To us, LOVE IS ACCEPTANCE. ❤️
A huge thank you to all the staff and students who wore PINK on Wednesday to show their solidarity and support in creating a more equitable, inclusive, and diverse world! ππ✨
To support your child(ren) at home, I encourage you to keep the conversations about acceptance alive. π±π£️
WE HAVE THE POWER to make a difference through our own inclusive thoughts, words, and actions! ππ¬π«
To all the wonderful children in our lives: YOU ARE SEEN, YOU ARE HEARD, AND YOU ARE VALUED! πππ
Upon reading through so many wonderful entries, I was truly touched by the heartfelt responses. π
It’s clear that your child put their whole heart into this activity, and it shines through in every word ✏️
I have every confidence that with our collective thoughts, words, and actions, we can continue making Nottawa the brightest, kindest, and very best place to be! ππ
In the coming days, these writing pieces will be coming home in your child’s agenda for you to admire. ππ
When they do, I encourage you to take a moment to celebrate your child’s message, they’ve put so much thought and heart into it!
I know you’ll feel just as proud (if not even more!) as I do. π Let’s continue to cheer on their voices and the positive impact they’re making! π✨
Over the past while, students have been working hard on several key math units, including:
✅ Fractions
✅ Division & Multiplication
✅ Coding π»
✅ Location & Movement π§
✅ Algebra π’
The check-in was designed to give students an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of these concepts in a meaningful way. π
These check-ins are not just about getting the right answer, they are a valuable tool for students to:
π§ Showcase their knowledge
π Apply their thinking
π£️ Communicate their ideas clearly
I use them to celebrate what students know right now π, and to help identify areas where we can continue to grow and strengthen together. π±
I'm so proud of the effort each student put into this check-in! π Whether they felt confident or noticed areas where they still have questions, this process is an important part of their learning journey. π
These assessments will soon come home in the agenda and I appreciate parents who take the time to go over these questions and review concepts their child needs extra practice on ☝️
Thank you for your continued support as we build these essential skills! π€π✨
Here’s What We Are Learning:
π³ Identifying methods of payment — We’re exploring different ways people pay for things, from cash to credit, debit, and even digital payments!
π§Ύ Estimating and calculating costs — Students are learning how to estimate the total cost of a purchase and figure out how much change to expect when paying with cash.
πΈ Understanding financial decisions — We’re diving into spending, saving, earning, investing, and donating — plus what influences these choices!
π‘ Exploring spending and saving behaviours — Students are discovering how spending and saving habits can differ from person to person, and what factors play a role.
π Deciding if something is reasonably priced — We’re learning how to assess if a price makes sense, helping students become thoughtful consumers.

I have posted the entire slide deck on Google Classroom for students and parents to access at home π‘ Check it out π |
It’s been such a fun and meaningful start to the unit, and I’m excited to see their financial thinking continue to grow!
Thank you boys and girls for your efforts as we build these important life skills together. π
I would like to take the time to honour my talented students for the effort they put into writing their artist statements for their Norval Morrisseau inspired Thunderbird artwork! π¦ ✨
Each student did their best to thoughtfully create a unique title for their piece and shared the meaning and reflection behind their artwork. ππ
Their words brought their visual stories to life, showing creativity, connection, and pride in their work.
It's inspiring to see how every Thunderbird represents something personal and powerful from family connections π§‘, to strength and growth π±, to cultural appreciation and storytelling π.
π Exciting news for parents: These vibrant masterpieces will be coming home next week in your child’s agenda for YOU to admire and celebrate at home! πΌ️π
We hope you enjoy seeing the creativity and heart your child poured into their art.
A verb tells what is happening to the noun! π✨
Verbs are the action or state of being in a sentence, they let us know what the subject (noun) is doing, being, or experiencing!
1. Action Verbs π₯
These verbs show action — something the noun is doing.
Examples:
The dog runs fast. ππ¨
She paints beautiful pictures. π¨
They jump over the fence. π€Έ
πͺ Tip: If you can act it out, it’s an action verb!
π Your turn!
Read these sentences with a parent. Can they find the action verb? Circle or say it out loud!
The cat climbs the tree. ππ³
He throws the ball. ⚾️
They dance to the music. πΆ
2. Linking Verbs π
These verbs connect the noun to more information about it. They don’t show action, they show a state of being or condition.
Examples:
She is a teacher. π
The soup smells delicious. π²
The flowers are bright yellow. πΌ
πͺ Tip: Linking verbs describe or rename the noun!
π Your turn!
Read with a parent and find the linking verb!
The sky is blue today. ☁️π
The lemonade tastes sweet. π
He was tired after the game. π
3. Helping Verbs π€
Helping verbs help the main verb show tense, possibility, or necessity. Helping verbs work as a team with the main verb!
Examples:
She is running to school. π♀️
They have finished their work. ✅
He will bake a cake. π
πͺ Tip: Helping verbs come before the main verb!
π Your turn!
Find the helping verb with your parent!
We are going to the park. π³
She will bring snacks. ππͺ
They have cleaned their room. π§Ή
⭐ Bonus Challenge:
With a parent, make up 1 sentence for each kind of verb! Write them down or say them out loud. Get creative! ✍️π
We are thrilled to announce our Business Fair happening on Thursday, April 17th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in our school gym! π️
A huge shoutout π to all of our amazing staff & intermediate students who have been working hard to create, prepare, and promote this exciting event in person and on the announcements π§©π¨π§
Their creativity and effort have been incredible, and they can’t wait to share their businesses with you. Let’s show them our support! π
π° Important Reminder for Parents:
If you wish, please send your child some money in smaller change (loonies, toonies, quarters, $5.00, $10.00 bills etc.) in a ziplock baggie clearly labelled with their name to help them shop with ease at the Fair!
π Our class will be visiting the Business Fair with our Kindergarten learning buddies to support them in spending and saving.
π‘All proceeds from the Business Fair will go towards supporting the Grade 8 Trip to Toronto! πΊ️π
This is an exciting way for students to contribute to their school community and help make this special experience possible.
Thank you so much for your support in making this event a success. We can't wait to see all the creativity and entrepreneurship in action next week! π✨

A huge shoutout and heartfelt THANK YOU to Teagan and her family for their generous donation of several boxes of Kleenex! ππ§‘
With these chilly winter temps still hanging on ❄️π₯Ά and the weather flip-flopping all over the place π¦️, we’ve definitely been battling the sniffles π€§ so this couldn’t have come at a better time!
Your kindness is keeping us comfy and cared for each day. πͺ✨ We truly appreciate your thoughtfulness! ππ§»π
