Week #36: May 26th - 30th
Dear Families,
🌼 Happy ALMOST June! Can you believe we’ve entered the final month of school? 📅✨ Where did the time go?!
I guess time really does fly when you're surrounded by sweet students who make you smile, laugh, and celebrate each day! 😄🎉
As we head into these final few weeks, I want to send a HUGE thank you to all of the families, parents, grandparents, and caregivers who have supported their child in so many ways at home. 🏡💪 From homework to projects, your continued encouragement means the world to me! 😊🙌
Together, we’ve helped your child grow academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviourally and that’s something to be incredibly proud of. 🌟📘💬
I’m constantly delighted by my student´s progress and their commitment to reaching their potential.
What touches my heart most? Seeing them do their best, just because it’s the right thing to do even when no one’s watching. 💚🌈
🌲 BLUE MOUNTAIN TRIP: 🏞️✨
What a beautiful, adventurous, and joy-filled day we had at Blue Mountain! From exploring nature to conquering outdoor challenges, our smiles said it all—pure fun, laughter, and unforgettable memories! 😄🍃🎒
💫 A massive shoutout and heartfelt THANK YOU to our amazing parent volunteers: James’ Mom, Finley L.’s Mom, Finley V.’s Mom, and Mrs. Boucher (my grade 4 & 5 teacher 🥰) 👏💚
Your presence made all the difference, from ensuring safety and smooth transitions to spreading kindness and encouragement, you brought such positive energy to every child in your group. 🧡
You helped create a day full of adventure, connection, and joy and for that, I am truly grateful.
Thank you for giving your time, your care, and your smiles. You showed our students what community looks like in action! 🌟👟🫶
We really couldn’t have asked for a better day the weather was great, the company was amazing, and the experiences were unforgettable.
The photos speak for themselves… just look at all that happiness! 📸🌞🎉
🏃♀️🏅 TRACK & FIELD - CELEBRATING EFFORT, HEART, & HUSTLE: 🏅🏃♂️
Congratulations to all of our Track & Field participants from Grades 4–8 who competed in our school meet on Monday! 🎉☀️
It was a fantastic day filled with sunshine, determination, and smiles from start to finish.
🎖️ Proud moment! Congratulations to these students who earned ribbons during our Track & Field meet, your hard work and sportsmanship shone brightly! 🌟
Every single athlete gave their personal best, and I couldn’t be prouder of the resilience, dedication, and spirit shown by our students. 💪❤️
To those who may have left without a ribbon:
Please know, I see you. 💛 I know how deeply it can impact young hearts. I shared with my class during gym this important reminder:
🗣️ “Sometimes we win, sometimes we LEARN.”
Not receiving a ribbon is not a failure, it’s a stepping stone. It’s a chance to learn, grow, and set new goals for the future. 🌱
🏆 To me, the greatest achievement is showing up, trying your best, and never giving up and each of you did just that.
Way to go, boys and girls, for competing with heart and completing every event with courage and pride! 👟👏
Let’s carry these lessons into our next adventures - on and off the field. 💚
🏃♀️💫 CHARLOTTE C. & ISLA – AREA TRACK MEET BOUND: 💫🏃♀️
Congratulations to Charlotte C. and Isla for advancing to the Area Track Meet at CCI in the coming days! 🏅🎉
This is a remarkable achievement, and I couldn’t be more proud of these two talented student-athletes.
They’ll be representing our class family not just with their athleticism, but more importantly with their strong character, sportsmanship, and heart. 💛🌟
🔴 NATIONAL ACCESSIBILITY WEEK – RED SHIRT DAY IN ACTION: 🔴
A big thank you to all the students and families who supported our class by wearing red on Wednesday to show their care and solidarity for individuals with accessibility needs. 🧡
Your actions speak volumes, this simple gesture of wearing red shows just how much compassion and empathy live within our classroom community.
In class, we continue to learn about the importance of acceptance, understanding, and making an effort to support one another, not just this week, but every day. 🌈✨
Let’s keep being those helping hands for each other, always.
🌟 TAB COLLECTION SHOUT OUT: 🌟
Speaking of which, in honour of National Accessibility Week, we had some incredible students step up in a big way!
A huge THANK YOU goes out to Charlotte C., Leyah, and Raiden for bringing in tabs to support individuals with accessibility needs. 💖👏
This initiative is more than just collecting metal tabs, it's about compassion, empathy, and community action, and these students are showing us just how powerful small acts can be. 💫
A very special shout-out goes to Avery’s younger brother, Ethan, who came up to me with the biggest smile and the kindest heart, proudly sharing the tabs he had collected.
His excitement was infectious, and it was such a beautiful reminder of the good that even our youngest community members are capable of. 🙌💚
To all our tab collectors, thank you for choosing to make a difference. Your actions are helping others, and that’s something to be incredibly proud of.
Keep it up, changemakers! 🌍❤️♿
🌟 CHARACTER ATTRIBUTE OF THE MONTH: RESPONSIBILITY 🌟
As we step into June, our focus turns to the important character trait of Responsibility.
💬 “We are accountable for our actions and we follow through on our commitments.”
Responsibility means:
✅ Being dependable
✅ Making good choices
✅ Taking ownership of your actions
A responsible citizen not only looks out for themselves but also considers the well-being of others. They understand that we each have a role to play in making our world kinder, stronger, and better. 🌍💛
Now, it’s up to all of us to do OUR part—to be responsible in our thoughts, words, and actions.
Remember:
💡 The only person you can truly control is yourself. So let’s…
🔹 Take accountability for our choices
🔹 Practice self-control
🔹 Finish what we begin
🔹 Keep trying, even when it’s tough
Let’s end the year strong by showing what true responsibility looks like in action—at school, at home, and in our community! 🙌💪
🎥 Let’s Learn About Responsibility – With Mr. Saad! 🌟
Below, I’ve posted a video by our very own SCDSB educator, Mr. Saad, who does a wonderful job explaining what the character trait of Responsibility truly means.
📌 Please take a moment to watch the video with your child, and have a conversation together about:
🔹 What responsibility looks like in everyday life
🔹 Why it matters
🔹 How we can all work on making responsible choices at home, at school, and in our community
These small conversations can make a big difference in helping our children become thoughtful, accountable, and caring citizens. 💬💛
Let’s keep working together to build strong character - one choice at a time! 🙌
While weekly word study sheets will no longer be coming home, I encourage families to continue nurturing literacy by using that time to simply read together.
Spend 20 minutes snuggled up with a book, read for the joy of it. Whether it's a picture book, chapter book, graphic novel, or nonfiction, reading just for fun builds a deep love of learning. 💖📖
Reading regularly gives students more contact with words, which helps improve reading fluency, writing skills, spelling, and comprehension. It's one of the most powerful ways to support your child's growth as a learner! 🌟
Thank you for being such supportive partners in your child’s learning journey. Here's to cozy reading moments and stories that spark imagination! 🛋️✨📚
📐 MATH – AREA & DATA: 📊
This week, we tackled the Question of the Week focused on calculating area! ✔️📏

Check out the picture we posted to see the problem they worked on independently! |
👉 Parents: Ask your child how they solved the area problem. Please celebrate the strategies he or she used and the math thinking they’re developing! 🧠💬
🔍 Up Next: Our New Math Unit – DATA!
We’re diving into a new unit where students become data detectives! 🕵️♂️📈 Here’s a sneak peek at what we’ll be learning:
🎯 Learning Goals:
📊 Understand the difference between qualitative (descriptive) and quantitative (numerical) data and when to use each
📊 Collect, organize, and compare data using frequency tables and stem-and-leaf plots
📊 Choose the best type of graph to display different sets of data and explain why!
📊 Find and understand mean, median, and mode and what these tell us about a set of data
📊 Ask good questions, draw conclusions, and make strong arguments based on the data
This is a super engaging unit where math meets real life and students get to explore, analyze, and represent information in creative and meaningful ways! 🎨📉
I am excited to continue growing your child´s math mind! 🧮💡
📘 EQAO TESTING– A CELEBRATION OF LEARNING: 🌟
Next week, my Grade 3 students will be participating in EQAO testing, an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate all they have learned from Kindergarten through to Grade 3.
🗓️ Testing Dates & Times:
-
Monday, June 2nd – Language A & Math 1
-
Tuesday, June 3rd– Language B & Math 2
-
Wednesday, June 4th – Language C & Math 3
-
Thursday, June 5th – Language D & Math 4
In class, please know I’ve shared with students that EQAO is not a test to worry about, it’s a celebration of what they know, and what they don’t know yet.
This isn’t just a snapshot of one moment in time, but a reflection of their growth over the past four years.
Please know that I will be providing a calm, supportive, and encouraging environment during all testing days. Each child will be reminded to take their time, do their best, and feel proud of how far they've come. 💖
I invite you to continue offering the same message of encouragement at home, your support makes a world of difference. Thank you!
📝 LANGUAGE:🎨✨
This week, we’ve stepped into the wonderful world of Poetry in our Language lessons!
I’ve introduced poetry as a unique and creative form of writing where we don’t write like scientists... we write like poets. 🌟
That means we focus less on facts and more on feelings, imagery, and expression. It’s about capturing a moment, a thought, or an emotion in a way that paints pictures with words.
Students are learning that poetry doesn't have to rhyme or follow strict rules, it can be playful, powerful, and deeply personal.
For the next while, we'll explore rhythm, repetition, descriptive language, and the beauty of seeing the world in a new way.
I’m already so proud of their creativity and their willingness to take risks as writers. Stay tuned for some original student poems coming soon! 🖊️💖
“Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” – Robert Frost
☕🎤 POETRY CAFÉ: ATTENDANCE 📝✨
As we soon begin rehearsals for our much anticipated Poetry Café on Friday, June 20th from 12:00 – 1:20 PM, I kindly ask for your help.
If you already know that your child will not be at school that day due to an appointment or special outing, please let me know ASAP via the agenda or email.
This information is very important as I assign and prepare speaking parts and help the children get ready to shine at the Cafe! 🌟🎙️
Thank you in advance for your support and consideration as we prepare to showcase our young poets in a celebration of creativity and confidence!
🌟 TEAGAN MATH MOTIVATION: ✨📚
A big shoutout to Teagan, who has taken my encouragement during our math lessons to heart when it comes to practicing her math facts! 💪🧠
She has shown incredible initiative by using her notebook and dedicating time to memorizing her multiplication facts from 0× to 12×. Her focus, determination, and positive attitude are so inspiring!
By taking these steps, Teagan is not only strengthening her math skills, but also showing what it means to be a motivated and independent learner. Her efforts are a fantastic example of how a little practice each day can go a long way. 👏📓✏️
Way to go, Teagan! Keep up the amazing work, you’re building confidence and laying the foundation for lifelong math success! 💚✨
📚🌳 LEARNING BUDDIES - OUTDOOR READING: 💛
This week, we had another heartwarming experience with our Learning Buddies as we enjoyed some outdoor reading time together!
There’s something so special about snuggling up with a good book under the open sky and our students did just that, spreading joy and a love of literacy. ☀️📖
It was so meaningful to see my students take on the role of literacy leaders, showing their younger buddies just how powerful and fun reading can be.
Moments like these remind us that reading isn’t just a skill, it’s a connection, a comfort, and a lifelong gift. 💕
Check out our sweet smiles and cozy reading spots outdoors—we were all reading for the love of it! 🌼📚
GROWTH MINDSET:
"Take time to be kind to your mind." – Thank you, Rhys, for this thoughtful reminder!
What does this mean?
It means that just like we take care of our bodies by eating healthy foods and getting exercise, we also need to take care of our minds by giving them rest, love, and support.
When we’re kind to our minds, we feel calmer, happier, and ready to learn and grow! 🌱😊
Here are a few simple ways families can take time to be kind to their minds together:
🌟 Go for a nature walk – Listen to the birds, breathe in fresh air, and enjoy the quiet.
🌟 Read a book together – Snuggle up and enjoy a peaceful story before bed.
🌟 Try a family mindfulness moment – Use link Dreamwalkers Meditations
Being kind to your mind doesn’t take long, but it makes a big difference! 💖
Let’s all remember to slow down and give our busy minds the care they deserve. 🕊️🧠🌈
With love, grace, and gratitude,
Ms. P. Gill
